The Demise of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Jon Stewart's attempts at appearing non-partisan are becoming more and more pathetic. It's like he tells his writers to include at least one anti-democratic party/liberal joke per episode. Take today's show, for instance, in which Stewart derides protestors and newscasters for comparing Wisconsin to Tunisia and Egypt. No one is saying the events in Wisconsin are completely like those in Tunisia and Egypt, but to deny the connection, and the inspiration that those two countries have provided the world, is utterly naive. (Also, Jon fails to mention that the situation in Wisconsin is being reported in Egypt, and that people in Egypt have sent pizzas to the workers, in a show of solidarity. So the Egyptian people themselves are making the connection. But Jon jokes as if it's just naive liberal Americans exaggerating the importance of their all-too-important task.)

Jon butts up against Fox News-level beliefs/commentary more every day. All of his years trying to rally the liberal base are being soiled by his late attempt at affecting a moderate tone. Liberals have no one to represent them in the government, now they are losing what has been one of their most powerful voices on television in the name of....what? This recent trend has been annoying at best and disconcerting at worst---now it's just getting disheartening.

And yes, all these years Jon has been rallying the liberal base. Every time he falls back on "I'm a comedian," he is either covering his ass or just flat out lying. The show has been, at least since 9/11, a rallying place for young and old liberals alike. His show is very serious political satire, in the vein of Jonathan Swift. He makes dick and fart jokes every now and then to get away with saying very subversive things about the political elites. Now he's kowtowing to them. And Stewart's unthinking audience just gobbles up his MSNBC/Fox false equivalency, his softball questions to top Republican lawmakers. Maybe Jon has just become as cynical as Beck, and it's all about the ratings/money/etc.

We need a new political satire, more like Parazit than Daily Show. This shit isn't cutting it anymore. Maybe Markos can start a fund.
